The Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards (BBMA) initiative has announced that March 31 will be the deadline date for applicants seeking financial help in order to pursue their educational goals. Applications will only be accepted online; applicants are urged to check out the website to learn about the criteria and to obtain and submit an application.
Since 2002, the Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards gala has provided over 1200 awards that total in excess of $5.2 million to more than 1000 Métis Albertans studying at institutions across Alberta and beyond, making it the largest non-governmental source of student funding for Métis students in Canada. The awards are based on a holistic assessment of financial need, connection to the Métis community, likelihood of improved opportunities, personal circumstances, and references. Awards generally range between $2,000 and $7,000, and cover a portion of education-related costs such as tuition and fees. Priority will be given to students entering their first year of post-secondary education.
The 2015 BBMA Awards Gala will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton West Edmonton Hotel on Saturday, September 26, marking the tenth year that the organization has been celebrating the achievements of deserving Métis students and helping them to move forward with their studies and their futures.
“The money that the students receive,” explained Communications Coordinator Theresa Majeran, “will enable them pursue or continue post-secondary education in a college or university or allow them to pursue trades-related careers.”
The BBMA initiative was established in 2001 at the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) offices by then-directors of the Canative Housing Corporation, Orval Belcourt, Dr. Herb Belcourt and Georges R. Brosseau Q.C.
