Anzac, Janvier and Fort McKay schools closed for remainder of the 2015/16 school year

(June 1, 2016) – After careful consideration, Northland School Division No.61 (NSD) has approved recommendations to close Anzac Community School, Bill Woodward School (Anzac), Father R. Perin School (Janvier) and Fort McKay School for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year. NSD initiated the process in accordance with the School Act at the Corporate Board Meeting on May 28, 2016.

Donna Barrett, Superintendent of Schools says, “Our division’s top priority remains the health and safety of students and staff impacted by the Fort McMurray and area wildfires. Our schools in Anzac, Janvier and Fort McKay have been closed for a number of weeks due to evacuation notices or air quality concerns. Our insurance adjustors MKA Canada, Inc., informed us that the schools suffered damage due to the wildfires and recommend the schools be closed while repairs are made.”

All students in schools impacted by the closures will be placed in the next grade when school reopens. Year-end report cards will be distributed in August and marks will be based on achievement prior to school closures.

To help support students, parents and staff impacted by the school closures, a Question and Answer (Q&A) section is available on the Northland School Division website http://nsd61.ca/about-us/division-news/post/q-a-for-students-parents-and-staff.
