USAY launches Thunder VR – an amazing language learning tool

Calgary, Alberta – On June 17, to kick off the 2019 Calgary Indigenous Awareness Week, Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY) will be launching Thunder VR, an interactive game that teaches the endangered Blackfoot language and traditions to young Indigenous Canadians.

Adapted from the Blackfoot graphic novel, Thunder VR is an immersive experience that weaves powerful Indigenous stories and adventures into language learning and preservation. Thunder VR is now available on the Oculus store.

Online reviews of Thunder VR say “…it deserves more stars than 5; it’s amazing, interactive and educational…”

This immersive game is designed to enrich the lives of urban Indigenous youth through self-empowerment and collaboration. USAY is proud to be at the forefront of Indigenous education by sharing traditions using modern technology.

USAY strives to empower urban Indigenous youth to envision and attain a healthy sustainable future while upholding traditional Indigenous values. In fact, 92% of Indigenous youth in USAY’s programs feel more connected to their culture; a powerful feat when 69% of Indigenous youth are in the child welfare system and detached from their families.

June 17th kicks off National Indigenous Week and USAY is celebrating with the Thunder VR official launch party. They’ll be showcasing the suite of VR programs such as Sacred Teachings and Finding Victor, an escape room; available for youth learning and development.

The Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth has been an influential not-for profit organization in Calgary since 2001. USAY strives to provide essential programming and services to Calgary’s Indigenous youth between the ages of twelve and twenty-nine. USAY aims to enrich the lives of all urban Indigenous youth by nurturing self-empowerment and fostering strong collaboration and communication to ensure healthy future generations.
