(ANNews) – Alberta Native News is hiring part-time reporters and freelance reporters.
We are looking for reporters and storytellers to join our team.
The ideal candidates should be able to tell the story of Indigenous issues in Alberta (and BC) through narrative and investigative approaches. We are looking for journalists who are driven, with fresh ideas and a great attitude.
Why are we seeking Indigenous issues reporters? Alberta is home to First Nation communities in Treaty 6, 7 and 8 traditional territories, Metis settlements and both urban and rural settings that have distinct and diverse needs and challenges that are being under reported. Their stories should be told.
The Indigenous issues reporters will be given the resources, editorial support and platform to mobilize new knowledge and bring attention to the issues. Alberta Native News has been a leading independent news source for 36 years with a reputation for in-depth, important reporting.
The successful candidates will report to our editorial staff. Experience as an Indigenous issues reporter isn’t required, but any relevant background should be noted in your application.
We welcome applications from reporters of all levels of experience, but a track record of reporting, especially in Indigenous media and/or formal journalism education will be considered an asset. We value investigative skills, too.
We want to go beyond the typical headlines and explore the issues facing Indigenous people in Alberta from the ground up. A candidate conversant on restorative justice, truth and reconciliation, residential school impact and a keen interest in success stories of Indigenous individuals and communities who are overcoming challenges and barriers will have an edge.
Further requirements (the right candidate will tick these boxes):
- Strong reporting and writing skills, with a flair for narrative
- Strong interest in Indigenous justice issues
- Time management skills, including the ability to keep to tight deadlines
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Please submit your cover letter and resume explaining why you are interested in this opportunity to [email protected] Please put “Indigenous issues reporter” in the subject line. The positions will remain open until filled.
We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce. If you’re creative, hard-working and love independent Indigenous media, we’d love to hear from you.
